The legendary photographer, Fritz von der Schulenburg commissioned me and sculptor Matt Steavenson to create a camera obscura for his beautiful home in North Wales. The resulting “sputnik” as the locals described it, a stainless steel converted silo tank, created the most mystical of images I have ever seen inside a camera obscura. The projected landscape shimmered onto the stainless steel creating what resembled a da Vinci painting yet more painterly and expressive, a type of ‘sfumato’ on a hard surface, more alive and magical compared to projections on a white wall.
The camera obscura and its celebration of time infinitum is a theme I continue to explore in my projects.
